WASHINGTON—President Trump made his name on the world’s most famous island. Now he wants to buy the world’s biggest.
The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has captured the former real-estate developer’s imagination, according to people familiar with the deliberations, who said Mr. Trump has, with varying degrees of seriousness, repeatedly expressed interest in buying the ice-covered autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans.
In meetings, at dinners and in passing conversations, Mr. Trump has asked advisers whether the U.S. can acquire Greenland, listened with interest when they discuss its abundant resources and geopolitical importance, and, according to two of the people, has asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.
Some of his advisers have supported the concept, saying it was a good economic play, two of the people said, while others dismissed it as a fleeting fascination that will never come to fruition. It is also unclear how the U.S. would go about acquiring Greenland even if the effort were serious.
With a population of about 56,000, Greenland is a self-ruling part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and while its government decides on most domestic matters, foreign and security policy is handled by Copenhagen. Mr. Trump is scheduled to make his first visit to Denmark early next month, although the visit is unrelated, these people said.

The Great Greenland Purchase It was laughable that as soon as media mentioned it, the haters took to Twitter in a manner that would have done complete justice to the Louisiana Purchase or Sewards Folly (aka the present State of Alaska). What the libs and chittering class will catch on to in a couple of months is why Trump would let such a signal out to Denmark. The answer is both simple and potentially explosive to the libs. Waters offshore of Greenland are estimated to hold over 100 billion barrels of oil and oil equivalents (natural gas mmscf converted to a liquid equivalent using estimated BTU content per cubic foot of gas). Add to that the strategic defense value of having more sovereign territory in the arctic. ( Anyone wondering what that means hasnt been watching the moves the Russians have been making recently to lay claim to the oil treasures in the arctic). Iceland alone could become a massive anti-submarine warfare center as it lies smack dab in the middle of the shortest routes for Russian subs to transit to the US coast. But Greenland becoming sovereign US territory would allow future administrations a LOT of options in checkmating Russian intentions towards annexing the arctic. The late Tom Clancy in his early novel "Red Storm Rising" had the Soviet Union invading and occupying Iceland as a strategic forward operating base in a war against America. Considering that Clancy got a lot of his material from public domain strategy studies done by the DoD. According to the history books, US made an offer to Denmark in 1946 and was turned down. Now the Danes are up to their keesters in red ink. If they're open to selling, look for the Great Negotiator to work foundations of deal while visiting next week. We are definitely living in interesting times. Im willing to bet Trump could finance the deal on revenues from leasing offshore blocks and severance taxes on any production. And the haters want to make it sound like its another ego exercise for Trump. Anything to avoid having to consider the man actually has a masterful grasp of geopolitical strategy. What I also think would be an interesting thing to watch if Trump pulls it off is how many Danish citizens would up and move to Nuuk before it became part of the US. Another conundrum in this deal would be how to deal with property. As I understand it, there is no private ownership of land in Greenland.
